The Indiana General Assembly created the White River State Park Development Commission in 1979 as a quasi-governmental agency and it operates outside of the state park system and the Department of Natural Resources. The Commission is composed of the Mayor of the City of Indianapolis, the President of Indiana University, the Director of the Department of Natural Resources, and seven citizens appointed by the Governor for four year staggered terms. Four members of the Indiana General Assembly also serve as non-voting members of the White River State Park Development Commission.
The first attraction to call the Park home was the Indianapolis Zoo in 1988 with the White River Promenade as the northern boundary trailway opening before the zoo. The following year, the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians & Western Art opened its door to the community. The Park soon became home to Indianapolis Indians Baseball in Victory Field, the state’s largest IMAX® Theater, the NCAA® Hall of Champions Museum and the NCAA® World Headquarters, the Indiana State Museum, and The Lawn at White River State Park (Concert Venue). A unique partnership of the state, city, federal governments, and private businesses constructed viable pathways for both pedestrians and vehicles in the park, including the Historic Central Canal Walkway, Historic Old Washington Street Pedestrian Bridge, Celebration Plaza and other Park specific spaces, and various trails along the White River in the Park.
Located in White River State Park along the scenic riverbanks, the Indianapolis Zoo offers 64 acres of both indoor and outdoor animal attractions as well as three additional acres of outdoor gardens. Open year round with hours that vary by season, guests can explore more than 1,200 animals of approximately 230 species as well as 47,000 plants specimens.
The Indiana State Museum, located in White River State Park, brings the best of the museum world to Indiana. Spanning three floors of permanent and changing galleries, the museum tells the story of the Hoosier state, and features a year-round calendar of exhibits, events and educational programs for all ages. Here you can engage with the past and connect it to the present, carrying your newfound knowledge and experiences with you long after you leave. In addition to exhibits, the museum houses an IMAX movie theater, the Indiana Store, The Farmers Market Café, and the L.S. Ayres Tea Room, open to the public during the holiday season and available for private dining throughout the year.
Permanent galleries include:

Elsewhere on the grounds, visitors may tour the historic Oldfields estate, then stroll through gardens designed in the 1920s by the famous Olmstead Brothers landscape design firm. Elsewhere, 100 Acres: The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park offers visitors one of the United States' foremost museum contemporary sculpture parks, with installations integrated into woodlands, wetlands, lakes and meadows.
